How to Obtain a Legal Entity Identifier (LEI)
With nearly 14% of the world’s Legal Entity Identifiers registered in the financial services sector, the United States is the largest user of the LEI. This prevalence is due to the numerous US regulations requiring the LEI for transaction reporting. If your US company is involved in financial markets, obtaining an LEI number is likely necessary.
Even if not legally required, there are many benefits to having an LEI. Consequently, many LLCs and Sole Traders are obtaining LEIs proactively. Since the LEI system is becoming a global standard, securing an LEI number now is advisable.
LEI numbers are available through Local Operating Units (LOUs), organizations accredited by GLEIF (Global Legal Entity Identifier) or endorsed by the ROC (Regulatory Oversight Committee). LOUs issue LEI numbers to legal entities.
To streamline this process, GLEIF introduced the concept of the “Registration Agent.” This entity makes it easier for legal entities to access LOUs and obtain an LEI.
What is a Registration Agent?
A Registration Agent assists legal entities in accessing LEI issuing organizations. Partnering with one or more LOUs, the Registration Agent ensures clients’ LEI needs are met.
LEI System is a Registration Agent, facilitating access to LOUs and handling the application process. We manage communications with the legal entity and securely process payments for LEI issuance or renewal, making the process fast, easy, and affordable.
